WHAT IS THE ROLE ABOUT?
The Product Development Support (PDS) role main purpose is conduct EWS variety trials and research for the new product/technology and provide recommendation if the variety is adaptable or acceptable in the market.
Variety trial planning, supplying the new test hybrids in different markets in the targeted African countries including conducting trials of prospect new varieties in farmers fields.
Timely monitoring and evaluation of all trials in the assigned territory.
On-time and regular submission of progress reports and highlights to department manager.
Make recommendations for acceptance or rejection of different PDS varieties tested in the area.
Keep updated of relevant market developments, competitors variety testing and new product introduction.
Implement and manage all PDS variety trials, special projects and other support activities based on objectives and trial plans in coordination with PDS Manager.
Playing active role in trial evaluation, processing of trial result and launching new products.
Identify the market opportunity, Initiate product testing and together with the sales and marketing to come up with the strategy how to penetrate the target market.
Maintain good relation with the variety breeders and keep them aware on what the market requirements are and share results of the trial that was conducted.
Managing the PDS staff based out of Tanzania and coming up with a system that will make them efficient in conducting trials and finding better varieties to offer to the farmers to improve their yield.
Gathering market information like growing season, competition, market size and share it to team which will be used for future strategic plan for EWS.
Conduct PDS variety awareness program with Sales & Marketing, R&D, and PDS Committee.
Provide technical support in new product launching activities
Expected Results.
Number of trials established = 60 trials per year.
Trial success rate = 75% to 80% of established trials.
Centralisation of PDS reports from trials done across Africa = one database covering Africa.
Working Relationships : This role is reporting to the Business Development - Africa and based in East Africa (Moshi, Tanzania) with regular travel to selected African countries
Internal Relationship.
Senior Breeders, Plant Breeders – information exchange on new varieties to be tested, PDS trial results, and market information.
Sales and Marketing Staff – communication on new products, market information and feedback, product launchings, and variety awareness programs.
Farm Managers - planning and implementation of variety awareness programs and trials at research farms, development of cultural management recommendations
Plant Pathologist – plant disease diagnosis and management strategies.
External Relationship
Distributors - Jointly plan trials of key varieties in key markets and follow through samples provided to them for trials ensuring reports are written in the prescribed format.
Farmers/Growers – develop partnership to conduct variety trials and communicate market information.
Vegetable Traders – gather end user preferences on vegetable crops.
Seed Dealers – source of information on market demand and competitors new product introduction.
Colleges and State Universities – cooperation trials on selected crops
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE
Background
Bachelor of Science – Major in Agronomy/Horticulture/Crop Sciences/Biology Sciences
Minimum of 2 years experience in variety testing, crop research, or sales and marketing of agricultural products
Good market knowledge of vegetable industry in the assigned area
Skills & Competencies
Keen interest in new product testing
Posses planning, execution and organizing skills
Has ability to interact and work with a farmer co-operators, plant breeders and Sales and Marketing
Good analytical skills - can combine data from various sources and draw conclusions
Self-starter, able to work independently and proactively
