Job summary
The Director of Audit & Assurance is responsible for providing a high quality internal audit service to TMEA which meets recognised international standards and which adds value to TMEA. S/he will provide independent and objective assurance to the Council, the Board and the CEO on the overall adequacy and effectiveness of TMEA’s arrangements for governance, risk management, and internal control.
The Director of Audit & Assurance has free and unfettered access to both the Chair of the AFRC and the CEO at all times.
Roles and responsibilities
Develop and maintain an internal audit strategy setting out the approach to meeting the assurance needs of the Board of Directors and the TMEA Council.
Develop an annual risk-based audit plan to identify priorities and resource requirements for approval by AFRC.
Regular liaison with TMEA’s external auditors.
Schedule and assign audits to team members, ensuring effective and efficient use of resources.
Commission audit services from outside providers to ensure the delivery of the audit plan within the approved budget provision.
Report to the AFRC quarterly on the implementation of the annual audit plan.
Ensure completion of audit assignments to provide independent, objective assurance to the AFRC.
Ensure that final reports are issued which highlight key risks and which provide useful advice and recommendations to TMEA management.
Contribute to ensuring that financial controls and other assurance processes and activities are appropriate and robust throughout TMEA.
Review the implementation of TMEA’s risk management policy on an annual basis.
Ensure risk management, transparency, zero tolerance of fraud and corruption, and due diligence in all activities.
Manage and oversee team performance through performance planning, coaching and performance assessments.
Ensure close coordination and foster strong integration with colleagues and stakeholders.
Develop and implement capacity development activities (e.g. training, coaching, information sessions) with TMEA staff and stakeholders including developing easy-to-understand guidance on various aspects of audit, assurance and risk.
Develop new methodologies to improve the audit process, making it “easier” for TMEA to request audits and implement recommendations.
Any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job, the title of the post and its grading as requested by the Chair of the AFRC or CEO.
Academic and professional qualifications
Undergraduate degree.
Qualified professional membership of an internal audit or accountancy body.
Work experience
At least 10 years’ relevant work experience in a busy work environment.
A successful track record in internal audit management and participation in the formulation of audit objectives, policies and strategies.
A successful track record of influencing, giving professional advice to and building effective and productive working relationships with senior managers and those engaged in managing risks.
Additional skills
The ability to provide professional, independent advice confidently, and propose recommendations on how to address control weaknesses efficiently and effectively.
The ability to handle competing priorities and a challenging workload.
An understanding of the development sector.
Willingness to continuously develop skills and knowledge to remain current with internal audit practice.
Strong strategic thinking, formulation and implementation skills including the ability to communicate strategy and impact concisely and simply.
Strong leadership and management skills.
Strong presentation, communication and personal effectiveness skills, with the ability to influence others to achieve objectives and gain consensus and collaboration.
Sound decision-making and judgment capabilities, as well as good problem solving and analytical skills.
A self-motivated individual who requires minimal supervision.
